In a social media post on September 1, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Naga City assured the public that scheduled random checkpoints will be conducted for the Peñafrancia Festival and not for unlawful purposes.
“While of course there will be unannounced random scheduled checkpoints on various days that will be undertaken by various agencies in the city as part of our security preparations for the Peñafrancia Fiesta,” the Naga Smiles to the World post said.
It also assured the public that all law enforcement activities will be done “within the bounds of (the) law”.
“There is no truth however to this circulating information that it will be for the purpose of planting drugs,” the post added.
The post was the LGU’s response to a viral message that said that there will be checkpoints where drugs will be planted to motorcycle riders which will serve as evidence to prove President Rodrigo Duterte’s claim that Naga City is the “hotbed of shabu”.
Meanwhile, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) will set up “Oplan Ligtas Byahe”, a motorist’s assistance kiosk in various locations in the City to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims and visitors of the celebration. (Reports from Radyo Veritas Legazpi)
