The financial administrators of the different dioceses in the Philippines gathered for the 19th Arch/Diocesan Financial Administrators of the Philippines (19th ADFAP) Convention in the Diocese of Legazpi on June 19-23, 2017 at the Oriental Hotel, Legazpi City.

With the theme Financial Stewardship in the Building of Communion of Communities, the said convention discussed relevant topics that aim to improve financial management Church resources.

Specifically, the participants, during the event learned and shared issues on stewardship of Church’s temporal goods and their appropriate responses. They also acquired the skills and competence offered as part of the ongoing formation program. Furthermore, the delegates established and strengthened friendships and the network between diocesan finance offices; and they also participated in the fruitful spiritual recollection and recreation.

On the first day, the delegates attended the recollection given by Most. Rev. Arturo Bastes, SVD, DD, Bishop of Sorsogon. The sacrament of penance was also made available to the participants. A Holy Eucharist was celebrated at 5:30 in the afternoon with Bishop Bastes as main celebrant at the Oriental Hotel.

On the second day, various talks were slated for the convention.  At 9 AM, Most Rev. John F. Du, DD, Chairman of the CBCP Pension Plan, addressed the delegates. Then Mr. Francis Estrada, Chair of the Institute of Corporate Directors, gave the keynote address entitled Towards Effective Financial Governance.  Afterwards, Mr. Jose G. Villaret, Jr. expounded on the topic Protecting Deposits in Banks. In the afternoon, the Business Meeting of the ADFAP was moderated by the Fr. Edgar Cirilo Eboña, ADFAP President. A Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Most Rev. Joel Z. Baylon, DD, Bishop of Legazpi at St. Gregory the Great Cathedral, 5:30 PM. In the evening, the Welcome Program was done after dinner at the Legazpi City Convention Center.

During the third day Fr. Jose Victor Lobrigo, President and CEO of SEDP-Simbag sa Pag-Asenso, Inc. and Fr. Romulo Castañeda, Oeconomus of Libmanan Diocese, explained the topic Social Enterprise: Key to Financial Sustainability and Building Communion of Communities. Next the topic Current Legal Challenges on Church Property: Agrarian and Informal Settlers was given clarity by Atty. Agusto Quijano, Atty. Milagros Quijano and Fr. Domingo Florida.  The afternoon was dedicated to the talk on Financial Management for Arch/Dioceses and Parishes given by Ms. Ann Mayeen Magno, Senior Director at Ernst and Young Transaction Advisory Services, Inc. A workshop was scheduled after the discussions. For the celebration of the Holy Mass, Most Rev. Rolando Tria Tirona, OCD, DD, Archbishop of Nueva Caceres, was the main celebrant at the Nuestra Señora de la Proteria Church, Daraga, Albay. Dinner followed at the parish’s St. Francis of Assisi Garden.

On the fourth day, Dr. Ruperto P. Somera, Tax Consultant and Former BIR Regional Director talked about Taxation for Non-Stock, Non-Profit Institutions.  In the afternoon, Mr. Augusto M. Cosio, Jr., President of First Metro Asset Management Incorporated, spoke about Investment Literacy in the afternoon. This was followed by the CBCP Pension Plan Business agendum handled by Fr. Edgar Macalalag. The delegates then transferred to St. Raphael the Archangel Parish for the Holy Mass presided over by Most Rev. Jesse Mercado, DD, Bishop of Parañaque. Then the dinners, socials and distribution of certificates were held at the Good Shepherd Hall of the parish.

The final day was spent for optional tour and buying of souvenir items before the delegates returned to their respective dioceses carrying with them the knowledge they acquired during the 19th ADFAP Convention.
